“Demo 2001” is already the fourth demo of this promising Dutch underground quartet from The Hague. Although this demo is basically untitled, Acrid themselves state that it could be called “In Your Face” and I must admit, not without reason. The demo contains three powerful yet melodic thrash death songs of excellent quality. The music is technical and complex, but not to the point where technicality has become a goal in itself. Most noticeable however is the numerous use of lead breaks and speed changes, which lends the music a very intense feeling. The vocals are very aggressive and once in a while slightly remind of Death’s, unfortunately deceased, Chuck Schuldiner and his aggression-riddled screams, but are varied and melodic enough not to become too boring.

The current death thrash scene is saturated with Gothenburg bands, Acrid however distinguish themselves from the masses in a refreshing way. Gothenburg influences can undeniably be found but Acrid’s complex metal displays definitely more traditional thrash influences and although the music is not in any way innovative, it certainly is refreshing enough to satisfy the needs of the average listener. But above all, “Demo 2001” has a very powerful and professional sound, which is far above the average demo release! “Demo 2001” is in my opinion a very successful demo, which clearly shows that this band has talent enough to make it in the overcrowded death thrash scene. Time however will tell, whether they will get a chance to prove themselves or not.
