U.S. power-metal. That`s Winterkill according to their record company. But Winterkill certainly has some more to offer on their third, but first European, release. The other two records of this band from Chicago, "Feast for a Beggar" and "Freedom", were only available in America were the band already seems to have a cult status in the underground. On "Taming the Wolves" the band plays what I like to call American hard rock with heavy metal influences. But the band certainly goes a step further. Listen for example to the Iced Earth influenced opening track "High on Life" or the old Bon Jovi-like "New Attitude". | |
But what makes Winterkill so exceptional is that the band tries to bring more variation in their music by using tension in their songs. From only bass, guitar and drums to great outbursts of anger with vocals and guitars. Vocalist Randy Barron therefore has a very diverse voice, from screaming to almost grunting. Their even is a Pantera-like song on this release, "Feast for a Beggar", off their first release. You just have to go and check this band out in the near future, this release could interest a large amount of metal fans. (Teun) |
