The South-German BLOODFLOWERZ prove with this “Diabolic Angel” that making the darker side of rock doesn’t mean that you create music that puts you down and makes you sit miserably on the couch. Most of the songs are just pretty rock anthems. First song ‘Fatal Kiss’ has a touch of HIM, when they rock, but most of the songs have got a sound of their own. That is mainly due to the beautiful female voice of Kirsten Zahn. She doesn’t use one of those orchestral, classical voices, but a smooth rock voice you might expect from the likes of the Guano Apes (although she sometimes sounds a bit like Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil as well).

Musically the band is definitely more rock, and less crossover, orientated than the German band mentioned above. Highlights on this album are the melancholic, instrumental ‘Mea Culpa’, which is directly followed by the ballad ‘Tears Of The Night’. “Diabolic Angel” is a good debut album if you’re into rock music that’s easy on the ears. If BLOODFLOWERZ finds the ability to create more diversity in their song material they could create some stunning albums in the future… For now this is a good debut record that shows that this band has potential, but still has to grow some more.
