The title of this record is somewhat strange considering the music on this album. It’s mostly more (dark) wave orientated synth-pop. Lyrically it’s imaginable that there’s some pain out there, but “Volume Two” contains songs that are mostly perfect for dancing. S.P.O.C.K. (Star Pilot On Channel K) starts the album with their space pop (‘I Don’t Know What It Is’), which sounds a bit like Iggy Pop goes electro. The second song of this band ‘Star Pilot on Channel K’ reminds us – mostly lyrically - of the song ‘It’s Like That’ (from Run DMC and Jason Nevins), but without the rap and the hip-hop beat. ‘Mfapl’ and ‘Neurocaine’ from NEUROTICFISH presents the best moments of an act like Depeche Mode. The catchy MELOTRON keeps us going with the songs ‘Ich Bin Wie Ich Bin’ (great up-tempo song) and ‘Tanz Mit Dem Teufel’ (Klirrfaktor remix). This last song is slowly building up to a dance song with the devil… The two songs from KLIRRFAKTOR ‘Das Spiel Ist Aus’ (absolutely the best song on this compilation and that says it all…) and ‘Sieg Der Wissenschaft’ show why this band has been asked to do some remixes. | |
Other bands like PROJECT X (with the more direct ‘The System Is Dead’), XPQ-21 (‘Close Your Eyes’ in which you can hear some lyrical parts you also hear during NIN’s ‘Starfucker, inc.’ – but who was first?), FUNKER VOGT (creates with ‘Gunman’ a ‘German beer schlager’, but strangely enough it’s a great song after all), IN STRICT CONFIDENCE (with a more mellow ‘Stern’), CAT RAPES DOG (with boy meets girl synth-pop and some western influences in ‘Glory’), ENFORCE (who created the most romantic ballad with ‘Remember Me’) and DECODED FEEDBACK (‘Reflect In Silence’ – alpha mix) show that there’s more pleasure than pain in electro land when you consider the quality.
