Imagine this. You don’t like complicated lyrics and you definitely don’t like complex song structures or albums you have to play a million times before they make sense. No, you want to sing along with songs you just can’t seem to get out of your head. You absolutely need that summerbreeze softly floating through your ears. A syndrom called ‘catchiness`. Well, let us introduce you to Wölf. A Belgian 4-some with an album (Gas Guzzlin’ Girls) on Funtime Records (Adolescents Records in the US), jampacked with 12 catchy punkrock anthems and a dot of emo. Balancing on the edge of punkrock and pop. A big Lagwagon meets a few Get Up Kids or something like that, although they don’t really break any speed limits. This is summer music, sunshine with a feelgood vibe, and pretty damn good, too; if this is your cup of tea. | |
Songs like Why Didn’t You Call Me, Naked Brain, Cum On kinda kept stuck in my head for days and days and days. Now it’s not all sunshine on this album. It gets a little too much of the same towards the end. You’ll find the more convinving songs on the first half of the album. But I feel there’s enough room to grow. This album is a very nice step in the right direction; Wölf seem to be well on their way to their piece of stardom. A 3-week tour through the United States with Lob 13 and a lot of college radio airplay in the US as well. Not bad for a band from Belgium. Things are looking pretty good for the band. So if you like catchy punkrock, buy the album. If not, forget about it. One guestion remains, what Gas are these Girls Guzzlin’? (Marc) |
