With the suitable title `Vengeance Unleashed`, Dying Fetus are back with a vengeance! This is their first recording with the new line-up on the Relapse singles series. Only guitarist/vocalist John Gallagher is left from the `Destroy The Opposition` line-up, after bassist/vocalist Jason Netherton, drummer Kevin Talley and Guitarist Sparky Voyles left DF to start/join Misery Index. Their replacements are: Vince Matthews - vocals, Bruce Grieg - guitar (who left the band after this recording), Sean Beasly - Bass and Erik Sayenga - drums, who played in DF before. I was positively surprised when I heard this single. It`s remarkable that the new line-up didn`t have any effect on the DF sound. It all sounds familiar. Vocalist Vince Matthews has the same kind of voice as Jason Netherton. `Vengeance Unleashed` sounds very fierce and aggressive. Like they have something to prove, which they have of course. It`s a typical technical, yet catchy DF song. Fast and brutal of course, but it also has a cool groove half-way the song. | |
Enough variety and a good production, what more can I say? DF fans won`t be disappointed. Too bad there`s only one song! I`m looking forward to the next full length. www.dyingfetus.com (8.0)
The B side is for Deep Red. They are a US death metal band from Finland. `The Beating Goes On` is the name of the song. Like I said, Deep Red play US death metal. You can hear that their biggest influences must be Dying Fetus and Suffocation (rip). Contrary to those bands, Deep Red don`t have their own style. They also lack their power and brutality. That`s a pity, cause the band sure know how to play. Especially the guitarists Antti Oinomen and Iikka Paasonen. The music is full of breaks and is very filled-up. Maybe a bit too much. The production is also a bit weak. There are lots of better bands in this genre. I also get the idea that the DM scene is getting overcrowded again with too many average bands just like in the mid `90`s. Cause this is pretty average too... Sorry. (6.0)
