‘Where Were You When’ is the long awaited discography from Human Remains. This groundbreaking US band existed from 1989 - 1995. This double CD documents the beginnings of musicians who went on to play with Discordance Axis (best grind band ever!), Burnt By The Sun, Deadguy and The Skies Denied. I am surprised by the sound quality of these two discs. Only the ‘Happy Days 7’ as well as the ‘1990 Demo’ and the ‘Metal Blade Demo’ sound pretty underground. But hey, this ain’t the fucking Dire Straits or Toto! The majority of this release sounds pretty damn good! Human Remains were one of the first bands of which the music was a successful combination of grindcore, death metal and hardcore. | |
The music is intense, explosive and aggressive. Raging blast and heavy grooves combined with odd song structures. Some parts are quite experimental, even nowadays. Paul Miller’s vocals remind me of John Tardy (Obituary) and Martin van Drunen (ex-Pestilence, ex-Asphyx), but more aggressive. Now and then he even reaches the same kind of insanity as the mighty Blaine Fart (The Accused). And that is a huge compliment! In short, this is great stuff! Highly recommended to people who are into bands like: Dillinger Escape Plan, Burnt By The Sun, Discordance Axis, Converge etc. (Martin) |
