It didn’t come as a surprise that Cannibal Corpse would release their eighth album. They just can’t get enough of it and posses loads of inspiration to create yet another album namely ‘Gore Obsessed’. Well I thought to myself ‘would this be the day to hear a more soft Cannibal Corpse’. Well, I can’t confirm that because when hearing this album I almost lost my sanity. It seems if it sucks my energy right out of my brains. The technical diversion of the music is so extreme that it seems like they have evolved to a standard upgrade. Like guitar player Jack Owen told me ‘we’re infected, and after that we just want more and more’. So it doesn’t seem to end at all. They need it badly. No problem I say because from time to time I also like to mush my brains with intelligent composed work of art.
This work of art kicks off with a strong technical blast called ‘Savage Butchery’. What shall I say, driven by instincts in quest for the kill. Breaking limbs and slashing sharp objects are exposed to me. Wow yeah, escorted by the almost impossible way of using the instruments I reach the next victim. Same intention here, brute gore killing escorted by the new style Cannibal members. Then the true dead arises, zombies. Yeah, I like the ‘Pit Of Zombies’ where bass player Alex Webster’s fantasy gets revealed by George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher, namely being eaten alive. | |
Zombies rule I think, so is that the reason why I like this form of expression or is it the aggression and technical ability of the band to create true oblivion. The music in its way is a form of therapy for the soul. Creating your own images in your head, as it seems that each song might as well be turned into a short independent movie.
Incredible what these guys are able to come up with. I must say that some songs seem to me a bit alike but well yeah, some people don’t see any reason for chance when it’s a good song, and good songs they are indeed. After hearing the songs over and over again you can hear absolute differences in each song so it might be just a matter of time.
And then in the last part of the CD the groove grabs back the attention. ‘When dead replaces life’ that is. Visualized by Vincent Locke, who painted the cover, this concept is brutally performed. Very cool, although I have seen worse paintings from the man. In my opinion a Cannibal Corpse fan should posses this album by any means for they won’t regret it as well as myself. Don’t expect this to be the best album ever, yet still good enough to fit the collection in my opinion.
