Many of you will recognize the name Ogre from his groundbreaking work in the electronic scene with his band Skinny Puppy. Some of you remember his side-projects, working for bands as Pigface and KMFDM. However, not widely known is that back in 1995, Ogre made an album for the American Recordings label, which never saw the day of light. Legal bindings and all prevented the album from a well-deserved release, and when contracts ended in 1999 Ogre went out looking for help in recreating the original recordings. Together with programmer Mark Walk they took up the name ohGr and the result of their collaboration is Welt.
Skinny Puppy listeners might find Welt a different listen than what they`re used to. Overall, it drips poppiness instead of eccentricism.

It`s more similar to KMFDM and it`s incarnation MDFMK, especially with songs as "Kettle" and "Pore". Even then, Welt remains a strange listen with some real good songs and some songs that are less appealing. Where "Water" is an excellent dance-track, I really wonder what the use of a song like "Devil" or "Cracker". But then there`s the hyperactive "Lusid" and the beautifully arranged "Chaos" to compensate for it.
Unlike KMFDM/MDFMK or even Skinny Puppy, Welt needs a lot of listens to acknowledge the beauty and majesty of the album. By then, you`ve learnt which songs to skip in favour of a constant flow of high quality. And then, you`ll realize that ohGr has created another milestone in his career, and that we should wonder what`s next…
