It’s Deviate’s tenth anniversary this year. To celebrate it, we get a brand new album from the boys from Belgium. They have gained quite a reputation over the last couple of years for playing a very heavy style of metalcore. Especially their previous effort, State Of Grace, saw them reach new heights with a perfect blend of super heavy riffing and emotionally charged songs. Hard to top that, I would say. Red Asunder contains a couple of twists and turns. For instance, the song Subscription To Your Paradise features almost Alice In Chains like backing vocals. Don’t worry though, Deviate hasn’t changed into an indie rockband. Most of Red Asunder offers the listener the usual concept, albeit heavier than ever.

And not just in music. Danny’s lyrics certainly don’t paint a pretty picture. Some sound personal, others dark. So besides heavy in sound, one could also call them heavy in content. The album ends kind of oddly with an LL Cool J cover. On Mama Said Knock You Out, the guys get some help from Biohazard’s Billy and Evan. Besides this not being such a good version, it is also very unrepresentative for the rest of the album. The only downside to a good cd, which consolidates Deviate’s status as one of the premier bands from Belgium. As an added bonus the first pressing of Red Asunder contains an extra bonus-disc with 12 never before released demo-versions. Hurry up though, because it’s limited!
