This newly founded Dutch sextet plays progressive rock/metal with traditional vocals with the purpose, according to Morgana X themselves, to create a new sound. While reading their biography a feeling of doubt washed over me; a live recorded demo? Being prepared for the worst I put on the album and to my surprise I must admit the quality of this demo is actually quite good. The vocals may be a bit too loud and the drums slightly too soft but that does not in any way mean that Morgana X doesn’t know how to play.
The three songs on this demo all show that this band is surely talented. The compositions are strong and refreshing with the needed amount of variety while still retaining a good song structure. Many progressive bands tend to lose their way in the thousand and one guitar riffs in each and every song, however Morgana X has managed to keep the music relatively simple and thus powerful and catchy enough to keep the listener captivated. | |
The only real downside of the demo is singer Eddy Boremans’ voice; one can debate this point however but in my opinion the vocals are slightly weak. Of course one must keep in mind that this demo is a live recording.
If Morgana X has really succeeded in creating a new sound I can’t really say however, as this demo is not long enough to judge that. It is nevertheless clear that this band has talent and I’m looking forward to hear a professionally recorded album from a good studio. You can order the demo from Morgana X’s homepage: http://www.morgana-x.com or by e-mail: info@morgana-x.com. (Frank) |
