This Greek band supposedly plays ‘pure depressive metal’, however the reality is unfortunately totally different. First of all On Thorns I Lay’s music is more rock than actually metal and reminds strongly of newer Paradise Lost and Katatonia. Secondly this music is far from depressive; it actually sounds quite happy. So you can imagine the surprise and disappointment I felt when I put on this album; ‘pure depressive metal’ has in my opinion a whole different meaning than this album, “Angeldust”.
Furthermore, the whole album is too predictable and most songs consist of maybe one or two guitar riffs, which get repeated to no end. | |
The female vocals and the violin are not used nearly enough, which is very unfortunate because they are actually quite good and make the title song, “Angeldust”, the only song really worth listening to.
I don’t know what On Thorns I Lay was thinking when they made this album, but the fact is that it just isn’t anything near ‘pure depressive metal’ nor is it anywhere near being an interesting album. Ok, the production is good, the booklet looks professional and I’m certain these guys can play, but it is all too faceless, too emotionless and too boring. (Frank) |
