This album, like the title already suggests, is Mind Colour’s debut album and unfortunately not all too groundbreaking. Mind Colour plays symphonic metal with some progressive metal influences, and the music is clearly in the vein of Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, Savatage and Fates Warning.
Upon listening to this album it becomes quickly clear that Mind Colour’s main weakness lies in their song structuring. Although many brilliant melodies pass by, the music in general lacks power. Most of the songs are not compact enough and Mind Colour frequently drowns in the self-created tangle of melodies, resulting in an album that is filled with good ideas but not with any real songs.
Another problem I have with this band is their vocals; just like the music they lack power and conviction and although Raffaele De Lucia at times really shows his good side, most of the time his voice is awfully limited and his Italian accent quite horrific. | |
This album really has to grow on you and after hearing it multiple times you notice that the above painted picture is not as bleak as it seems; this band certainly has talent. Like I mentioned before, this album certainly doesn’t lack excellent melodies and original ideas. Of course there are parts, which sound totally unoriginal (especially the keyboard solos remind too much of Dream Theater). Nevertheless this band is a whole lot more original than most of the zillion and one other symphonic metal bands from Italy and in that way a pleasant surprise. If Mind Colour manages to write songs instead of ideas and melodies and concentrates slightly more on their own sound, then this could actually become a very interesting band. (Frank) |
