Knowing only the bandmembers but not their music, I was actually a bit surprised by hearing this album and finding out their music was quite different from what I expected. Bloodlet is, bluntly said, a part of the hardcore scene but incorporates elements from the metal scene as well as sludge. The band was founded in early 1992 and has been playing and recording until the dramatic 1998 when the members decided to call it quits for a while. This year, however, saw them reforming and recording this album for Victory under the excellent supervision of Steve Albini.
"Three Humid Nights In The Cypress Trees" is musically a very interesting, raw and crunchy album that has a lot of intriguing rhythms and patterns emerging from the songs. | |
However, Scott Angelacos` vocals are a big letdown as far as I`m concerned. His vocal style doesn`t appeal nor draw you into the music, rather sounds like a dissonant on top of the music. Especially the clean parts sound so off-key you might wonder whether or not they used the wrong tape in the studio.
If you`re a fan of bands like Neurosis, Eyehategod or Clutch, you should give this a shot. A quick listen might help you decide whether or not you like it; once again, the music itself is excellent. If this were an instrumental album, I`d probably rate it a point-and-a-half higher. So try it, and hear for yourself. (Xander) |
