This concept album about man consisting of the corporeal (flesh) and the incorporeal (soul) is aimed a little too high. Not only the concept itself, with the predictable conclusion that we humans spend too much time and energy to meet the corporeal needs and thereby neglect the incorporeal needs, but the music as well. Especially Justin Marler’s vocals are weak. They lack melody and conviction. He merely follows the keynote with a shaky voice. And sometimes he’s a little off-key as well. The music itself is a bit too predictable and long-winded but there are some better parts as well. Although not many. The main problem is that The Sabians constantly try to force a dramatic atmosphere because of the theme of the record.

If the album wasn’t so grandiloquent they could have concentrated more on the musical side. Music is just like us humans: you have to meet the corporeal needs before you can fulfill the incorporeal needs. I hope they will next time because you can’t deny there’s talent in this band. A song like ‘Black Lie’ for example is pretty good. A melodic bass line, swinging drums, good guitar parts and well-structured. Even the vocals work out quite good in this song. But one good song and a couple of good ideas can’t carry a whole album.
