Swedish outfit Mammoth Volume are renowned for their broad and open minded interpretation of the stoner rock genre. 70s hard and prog rock mixed with doomy riffing and spaced out jams. It’s all there. Through the years they have earned quite a reputation in the genre. These recordings date from the period before they were signed to a label. The diversity that characterizes them these days isn’t there yet. There are some killer riffs though. I can imagine these demos led to a record deal because, especially considering these recordings were done between 1997 and 1999, Mammoth Volume sounds like what they were back then: a very promising stoner rock band. | |
Of course, nowadays it’s all a bit predictable and compared to their later work it’s fairly simple and not as diverse. I think the recordings are placed in chronological order as the quality of both the sound and the songwriting improve as the album progresses. This collection of recordings will mainly appeal to Mammoth Volume fans and stoner rock diehards. So, if you consider yourself as either one of these: The Early Years album contains over seventy minutes of stoner rock history to groove to. (Walter) |
