Do I hear Dimmu Borgir and Him at the same time? This can’t be; but yet my speakers would not lie to me. Divercia sure is diverse, the guitars sound very heavy and remind me often of Dimmu Borgir, a less harsh version though. But the vocals make this band sound different. Jyri Aarniva, their vocalist, sings clean. He has a deep and calming voice and the link with Him is quickly made. Especially the heavier and faster songs, like ‘Transylvanian (Love)’, ‘To Forgive’ and ‘Vaya Con Diablos’ are the ones that I really like. The calmer songs do not sound bad, but are not as defying as the heavier songs. It is really remarkable to hear a vast wall of sound and yet calm vocals. On this album the traditional vocals have their part also, although not a great one.

They finish this album by giving it just that one touch of aggression. These vocals are well used in a song as ‘Planeteer’, sharply contrasting with the clean vocals. Sometimes it is a bit too much for me, some songs I find really dull. The vocals also just don’t fit on some guitarriffs, through which the music doesn’t sound logical. These aspects won’t spoil ‘Modus Operandi’, because most of the songs are quite good.

This album can appeal both to people who are into extreme metal as well as to the ones that like a bit more melody. I’ll give an advice to the ones that want to listen to this album: listen to it more than once. It takes time to get used to the sound of Divercia, but after a while you might like it.
