The Greek Bob Katsionis studied classical organ and combines this with a special interest in metal music. He is heavily influenced by Dream Theater and Y.J. Malmsteen. Katsionis recorded his first solo album Turn of My Century in his home studio. On this CD he plays keyboards and guitar. The bass is played by Jimmy B. and for the drums Katsionis used his computer.
After listening to this album a couple of times, the first thing that comes to mind is that you are listening to a superb keyboard player who wishes to show off all the complex tricks he can do on his instrument. The faster he plays the more credit he is expecting to gain. This is a pity because this takes his focus off originality (a lot of Dream Theater) and track composition. | |
Another point of criticism is the lack of contrast between the keyboard and the guitar, a result of both instruments being played by one person. Highlights on Turn of My Century are the track “Window Of The World” and “My Strange Girl”. These tracks excel because they are a lot more adventurous than most tracks on this album. Other tracks I would like to mention are “Forbidden Erotica” which is quite subtle, even mystical and “Song Of The East” with experimental Eastern influences.
There are some great tracks on this album and Dream Theater fans should definitely check this one out. (Geert) |
