Hell yeah, I guess one of the better thrash recordings this year is going to be bombed on society by Impious. A band that, until today, I had never heard of, although Impious was founded over 8 years ago. They’ve released three demos and two full-length releases (“Evilized” in 1998 and “Terror Succeeds” in 2001). And now in 2002, Impious is back with their third release “The Killer” on which they show how modern thrash metal should be played.
Intense thrash riffs are combined with a more crust approach that gives their music some rough edges. Musically, Impious sounds somewhat like a combination between The Crown and the old Soilwork. | |
Also bands as Nevermore (some of the riffs) popped up in my mind. And if I’m correct “The Killer” was recorded in the same studio in which the Crown also recorded their latest release (Studio Mega, TJ).
But Impious definitely has something that can be called a sound of its own. Especially the fat solo parts, unexpected riff changes, and the vocal variation. What to think of “Dead Eyes Open” with the fantastic chorus, or other thrash bombs as “Six, Sex Six” (interesting title;) or “Burn The Cross”. But Impious also hails the past with some riffs every now and then (“Caught In Flesh”). Definitely a release to look out for. (Teun) |
