A collaboration between Aleah Angstrom, formerly from Candy Says, and her husband Dave Angstrom from Supafuzz, Devil May Care is a clear mix between the vocal-oriented pop from the first and hardrock from the second mentioned band.
Even though the songs on the album all share common elements - rock and especially Aleah`s angelic vocals which are a reminder of Tori Amos as well as Heather Nova and Within Temptation - there is still a great diversity among songs themselves.
Opener "Wide Open" is a horrible cliche pop track lacking a real spine, just like the Alanis Morissette-style "Nobody Loves Me" and the forced "That Girl". On the other hand, there are some more hard rock oriented songs like "Disappearing", "Your Mistake", "Mother" and "Little Anxiety" where a perfect combination between melody, atmosphere and subtle anger are forged into very strong tracks. | |
And then there`s "Why Would I", an amazing Amos-like song that is guaranteed to give anyone goosebumps.
Lyrically, most tracks deal with Aleah`s `becoming a mother`, but fortunately not in the soft, mushy ways that people might associate with a word like `motherhood`. All in all, _Delicate_ has some very strong songs but tries too hard to please everyone with different styled songs which don`t really seem to belong there. Still _Delicate_ will definitely have an appeal on people who are into poprock and hopefully we`ll see a follow-up to it in a not-so-long while. (Xander) |
