“Fölktergeist” is a double live album with a name that is a combination of Skyclad’s album, “Folkémon” and the track “Polkageist!” from that same album. I have to admit that I have never ever heard of the Spanish Mägo De Oz but considering the Skyclad influenced album title, one simply must assume that we are dealing with a folk metal band here. The reason why I have never heard of this band becomes clear quickly; everything is in Spanish, each and every song and each and every spoken passage, and it seems this band is mainly promoted in Spain.
The album starts with a classical intro that comes from tape followed by the song “Satania”. Mägo De Oz is indeed folk metal with classical influences and it is all quite original too. The band is definitely influenced by Skyclad but Mägo De Oz’s music tends generally more towards power metal while Skyclad is of course more heavy metal oriented. The songs are very catchy with flutes and violins playing very playful medieval folk melodies and the whole concept is more upbeat than Skyclad. Mägo De Oz seems to be total party music!
The sound of the album is very good, even though the guitars could have been a bit louder and the vocals slightly softer. | |
The audience seems to know each and every song and Mägo De Oz plays very solidly. Okay, there are some minor mistakes like for instance during the beginning of “Santa Compaña” but they are unavoidable. I only have one real complaint; the singer seems to have some problems with the higher notes, especially in the beginning. However he seems to get better as the album progresses and it never really gets to the point where it starts to be annoying.
If you dig live albums and are a Mägo De Oz fan, or just a big folk metal fan, then you might want to get your hands on this album because it is highly entertaining and the album has a very good atmosphere. Especially the songs “Hasta Que El Cuerpo Aguante” and the final song “Molinos De Viento” are very impressive; the whole audience seems to sing along and it just sends shivers down your spine. Other highlights of the album are “Fiesta Pagana” and “La Danza Del Fuego”. (Frank) |
