Marzenia Zapomnianego Czasu is the first demo of this newly founded Polish band. The demo starts out with a small intro before bursting into its first song, ”Opetanie”, which starts with a very straightforward Gothenburg-type of death thrash guitar riff. Don’t fear however, because things turn quickly a little bit more original. Dementia’s music is very dynamic with a myriad of speed and atmosphere changes and the band is clearly not afraid to experiment once in a while. Nor is the band afraid to put melody aside for a few minutes and go at it full speed.
The only song on the album with English lyrics, “The Last Sacrifice”, displays Dementia’s dynamics probably the best. An atmospheric spoken interlude breaks the intensity but only momentarily, before Dementia fires up a full speed death metal guitar riff. The English might not be the best you’ve heard and the accent is quite terrible but somehow it has a certain charm and the whole spoken passage reminds me of a band like Agathodaimon or fellow Polish band Lux Occulta. Both aforementioned bands are masters of setting and maintaining an atmosphere and although that cannot be said about Dementia just yet, they certainly are very promising. | |
One must not forget that this is their very first demo.
The music on Marzenia Zapomnianego Czasu can best be described as melodic death thrash metal. Dementia uses good background keyboards, not unlike the Swedish Embraced, to create a certain atmosphere. What sets this band apart from bands like Embraced is the excellent balance between aggression and melody, and the song structuring in general is very good for a beginning band. Dementia has opted to keep the songs compact, retaining on the one hand power while on the other hand creating diversity.
The quality of the sound of this demo is something very remarkable and professional. One can argue that the sound lacks balls and that the drums sound slightly hollow, but keep in mind that this album is a demo! I can only conclude that Dementia has released a very convincing demo and if this band manages to refine their music and use a slightly more original approach, then nothing stands in the way of a record deal.
