Though they open with some African oriented music, you will soon know what STERIL stands for: groovy industrial with some rock influences. Although “Disposable” and “Out Of Control” got some Nine Inch Nails influences, the band keeps its own style with the use of some drum ‘n’ bass beats. “Witch Blade” is a potential upbeat dance floor filler (with a quiet piece in the middle) and should be the next single. “Chemical Bastard” shouts out the Prodigy, although this song impresses more than the new single of the band from the UK.
The additional vocals of L-ja on “Guess” assure us that the system needs a girl like her. It’s a combination of heavy drum ‘n’ bass with female punk vocals. “Back To 1999” shows that there’s more to STERIL than just heavy beats. It’s an ambient song that reminds of the quiet film music that Apollo Four Forty can create as well. | |
The single “I Get Closer” even has a reggae tune underneath it. Although the song quickly explodes in a dance oriented song. The ambient “Strange Pusher” shows yet another side of STERIL. You could compare this to music from Underworld.
“Underneath The Skin” is the only song that shouldn’t have been on this record. It’s slowly building up to the climax, but that comes a bit too late. “Prelude” is the classical intro (orchestra arrangement by Kai Leinweber) to “Phoenix From The Ashes”. During this song it’s only appropriate to listen quietly or to sing along. In the end Purification is a pleasant journey through a wide scale of electronic oriented music. Deep respect for them as a band and for Mähne Meenen whose voice adapts to the different styles of music. (Beautevil) |
