Bands like Mudhoney, Kiss, and Wildhearts must have been an inspiration for The Sewergrooves. Hearing this CD makes you think: nowadays this must be Scandinavian. This Swedish four-man band is reminding strongly of the recent Hellacopters- work in a messy, rough production (meant positively: honest and direct).
Most songs are based on 70s arrangements in a modern jacket, with less Ace Frehley-sounding guitar solos than the earlier mentioned Hellacopters, but at times with more emotional vocals. Sleazy, energetic, no nonsense rock ‘n’ roll, with nice hooks, and some ooohs and aaahs background vocals in the chorus, performed by musicians who know what to do, and when to do it. | |
One exception is “It’s My Century”, a song which contains nice ideas, but a very massive final result. This can get boring, despite the beautiful acoustic outro. In the more straight rockers (“Wanna Be Your Man” and “16 Thousand Satellites), they succeed in giving more attention to timing, breaks, and the use of more variation or less instruments, to keep the overview. This results in catchy, filthy rock ‘n’ roll songs in the best Scandinavian tradition. (Cor) |
