A record filled with household names. Josh Homme (guitar/vocals) and Nick Olivieri (bass/vocals) of Queens And The Stone Age and Kyuss fame accompany Masters Of Reality’s own John Leamy (drums/vocals) and Chriss Goss. Former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan (who also released some wonderful solo work) appears on “High Noon In Amsterdam” to add his dark, smoky voice.
The songs are a good cross section of the studio albums. The sound quality is pretty good but differs throughout the album as it is a compilation of several recorded shows. The acoustic guitar is too thin and twangy for it’s not been recorded with a microphone but with a D.I. | |
. The same goes for the bass on “Time To Burn”.
The performance itself is up to scratch. A couple of times Chriss’s vocals are a little shaky and the back ups are somewhat off key occasionally. But generally they do really well. The dark-yet-dreamy power of the performances has been caught by the recording. From the 10 minute rendition of “Why The Fly?” to the driving “She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)” it’s all there (including the Ramones’ “Cretin Hop”). A must have for Masters Of Reality fans. And for those who think Queens Of The Stone Age are something exotic a good way to discover who learned the Queens the tricks of the trade. (Walter) |
