`The Voice Of Rock`...now there`s a nickname for ya. When fans and media give you that name you have to perform accordingly each time you release a new album. There`s only one man that carries that name and his voice is indeed that strong; Glenn Hughes. Of course first known as the new singer of Deep Purple in 1973 (!) but crossing many musical boundaries in the decades after the 70`s. He scored a worldwide hit in 1992 with `America: What Time Is Love` as prominent guest in KLF, participated in many projects and even was in Black Sabbath for a short period (`Seventh Star`). The last few years Hughes has been releasing several strong albums as a solo artist and toured with much success. His voice hasn`t changed a single bit in all those years and `Building The Machine` makes that very clear for sure. | |
This album shows Hughes` love for Soul and Funk, brought up to taste with hard rock. And yes, it is reminiscing the 70`s. On several tracks a Hammond organ joins in, just like in the Deep Purple days. The music leans on that legacy but is more sophisticated, the DP cover `High Ball Shooter` very well proves that but still has the original impact! `I Just Want To Celebrate` has the legendary Pat Travers as a special guest and that is one of the GH strongest songs on `Building The Machine`. The album cover also has a 70`s feel; Hughes showing 70`s era fashion and together with the photography it makes a strong impression and that simply goes for the entire album. Glenn Hughes IS the voice of rock you know... (Winston) |
