‘Electro pop’, a term that is being used for a lot of bands these days. A rather safe term of describing music, since I’ve heard people call Orgy electro pop, and yet Depeche Mode seems to be the leading band in this genre. The German duo Boytronic however don’t need to play it so safe, since they have already proven themselves as good songwriters, considering the fact that they have released 6 albums and 20 (!) singles since the band started in 1983.
The new album, Autotunes is another step closer to the European hit charts, compared to singles like "You" and "Hurts". For this album, the first single has been selected in the shape of "Living Without You", a four minute taste of the album. It definitely shows the idea behind the whole album; not so difficult pop songs with a bit of electro combined with lyrics that deal with love affairs and loneliness. | |
It’s vocalist Holger Wobker that makes the record so poppy as it is; a true ‘love-voice’ that proves itself best in "Living Without You", "Tune Called Emotion" and the mega-electro "Perfect Lover". And maybe that’s the bad point of this album, the huge amount of pop influences. Perhaps the band should try to use some other lyrics than the now known love songs, because now they seem to have a bit too much in common with pop.
Nevertheless, the duo have created an album that deserves listening to if you’re looking for a way to calm yourselves on a lonesome Saturday night.
