This is a gift for all the narrow-minded people who think Machine Head is too catchy nowadays. Gust Of Anger (GOA) has created an album that can be compared to Burn My Eyes. It has the same great elements of both metal and hardcore. GOA even look like their colleagues: T-shirts of New York, baseball caps, a few members with long hair and even someone with a goatee like Robb used to have.
Formerly known as Ultra, GOA formed in 1997 from the remains of various Latvian metal bands. After recording a demo, the band got the well-deserved attention of Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, SYL and Stuck Mojo) and he invited the band to record their debut album in his Dug-Out studio in Sweden.
About the music: it’s not very original, but the performance sure is! To give you an idea of what it sounds like: heavy (and I mean HEAVY) guitar riffs are continually blasting out of your stereo. Just take a listen to the opener of this album: “They Know It”. | |
Not too strange if you have a producer of this calibre! If you listen carefully you’ll sometimes even discover a well-hidden Meshuggah riff. The singer (Denis) has an angry, aggressive and melodic voice (with an accent of course) that perfectly fits within the music. My personal favorite is “I Hate You”. Just take a listen to the drums and you’ll know what I’m talking about!
Altogether “Natural Hostility” as a whole is a very good debut. The only thing about this album is its lack of highlights. The album is very good, but all songs seem to sound a bit the same: the album seems like one song, interrupted by ten interludes. I have to say that GOA won’t easily bore you though! This piece of music is distributed in the Netherlands by Culture Records and if you like the bands mentioned above, you definitely need to take a listen this piece of music. (Dennis) |
