The Canadian Heaven’s Cry released their promising debut album Food For Thought Substitute, already back in 1996 but the band fell victim to bad management and a disastrous label. Fortunately they have recovered from that potentially lethal setback. Now they are back with their latest effort Primal Power Addiction, which has been released by the small Dutch label DVS Records.

Right from the very first second Heaven’s Cry sound convincing and show that they have truly something new to offer. Primal Power Addictionis a very complex and progressive metal album that is influenced by bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X and Psychotic Waltz. While comparison to the aforementioned bands might lead to unattainable levels of expectation, Heaven’s Cry nevertheless manage to reach Dream Theater’s level of complexity while on the other hand paralleling Psychotic Waltz’s brilliant psychedelic and psychotic sound.

Fortunately, the music is not overly complex and originality has not become a goal in it’s own.

Primal Power Addiction brims with virtuosity and originality and anyone who is into bands like Symphony X and Psychotic Waltz should seriously consider checking these guys out! Highlights of the album are the twisted “Komma” and the psychedelic “A Higher Moral Ground”. Heaven’s Cry concludes the album in style with the Midnight Oil cover “Beds Are Burning”. The song has been interpreted in the band’s own original way and therefore fits in perfectly with the rest.
