It isn’t easy to write the perfect (electro) pop song. We don’t mean commercial pop songs, because that’s a whole other story. It’s therefore strange that the COVENANT makes it all sound so easy. Northern Light is filled with well written, intelligent electro pop songs. The deep beautiful relaxed voice of Eskil Simonsson is in perfect harmony with the softly arranged electronic music. This fifth album of the Swedish COVENANT got perfect melody’s, that’s for sure. If you listen to the song “Winter Comes” you notice some Depeche Mode influences. Northern Light is a guiding light when you search for electro with a meaning. From up-tempo opener “Monochrone” until the laid back (trip hop orientated) “Atlas” the COVENANT shows to be in perfect shape. | |
Relaxed, but never boring. It’s a pleasure to listen to the ‘small’ things in the music. The ballad “Invisible And Silent” is the perfect ballad for all dark romantic souls out there. The song is supported with some female vocals during the chorus line. Songs like “We Stand Alone” and “We Want Revolution” let us know that the COVENANT didn’t forget the people on the dance floor. The impressive “Rising Sun” makes you wonder why an act like Depeche Mode got all the fame. Maybe this music is too intellectual?
Northern Light is the best possible way to end the day…
