Just little over a year after Hot Water Music released A Flight And A Crash, their debut for Epitaph, the band manages to pump out another full length. It’s incredible that a band can maintain such a high musical output (let’s not forget the split EPs they did with Alkaline Trio and The Caskett Lottery last year) and keep the standard high. With this one they raise the bar even more; Chris, Chuck, Jason and George weren’t completely happy with last year’s “A Flight And A Crash” and seem to have pulled out everything for Caution.
Taking more time to prepare for the recording of this album has payed off: the songwriting, which wasn’t exactly sub par to start with, has just gotten better again with the overall mood of the material being slightly more uplifting than their Epitaph debut. | |
The familiar elements have stayed: Chris and Chuck’s dual vocals, the driving guitars and the dead-on honesty are all still here. And let’s not forget their talent for writing catchy songs, without making them sound too polished or smooth.
Even though the production on this one is probably the best they ever had (courtesy of producer Brian McTernan), they still manage to keep their raw edge. Just listen to opener “Remedy”; The trademark sheer drive in that song sets the pace for the entire album, with no weak songs in sight. Caution captures the band at its finest hour. Highly recommended. (Miguel) |
