Through time a couple of Everon releases found their way into my CD collection. The problem is that these albums rarely got out of my CD-rack and into my CD player. Although there is nothing wrong with these albums, somehow it always seemed to me that there was something missing in Everon’s music. Something the band doesn’t lack this year however, is inspiration. After releasing the well acclaimed Bridge in June, their upcoming release Flesh will hit the shops in October.
The band wrote the music to both albums in the same period. They could have made it a double album, but decided to go with two separate releases on different dates. Probably a good choice since the tracks on Flesh are a bit more orchestral and there are some guest musicians among whom vocalist Judith Stuber.
Of the eight tracks on the album, three deserve special mention. “Already Dead” is one of these tracks. It starts out with a beautiful piano melody which, in combination with de delicate vocals of Oliver Philipps, remind me of Kate Bush. | |
The addition of female vocals is brilliant, a great track. Title track “Flesh” is a fourteen minute epic, containing all the elements of progressive rock. The heaviest parts are followed by gentle piano intermezzos with addition of guitar and deep soft drumming. In my opinion the distorted vocals are a bit overdone.
Flesh is a very solid album. This German Gruntlichkeit however has its downsides. I now realize that early Everon rarely exceeds itself, all songs have got this characteristic Everon-sound. This brings me to the last track “Back In Sight” that was written by live-keyboard player Oliver Thiele. Since he left the band, Everon considered this track as a bonus tribute track. It is just the different approach of Thiele and the addition of Judith Stuber, which make Flesh a great and perfectly balanced CD.
