Album review, version 12.0
I have tried and tried, but I just can’t seem to get this right. I don’t dislike this album, but it almost seems as if someone has been trying his very best to make me do just that. Musically there is no problem at all, but the mix is just not good. It’s hard to find the right words, as I don’t want you to believe that this is a bad album or something; but there is a flaw that I cannot ignore. Somehow the balance is plainly wrong. And once you have heard a thing like that, you just can’t ignore it anymore.
Pyramid is, as the obligatory full-colour press-info sheet states in Tolkienesque phrases, one of the leading acts in Spain. I can’t imagine that this album will positively contribute to that status. The live performances must be really exceptional, but this album is just not good. | |
For example, the vocals are too much on the foreground, which is enough of a bad thing on its own; but it emphasises the singer’s difficulty to reach high notes cleanly on the way. You can hear him struggle too much, where on other albums (and albums of other bands) the vocals blend in more, making them much more pleasant to listen to. And you don’t get hit in the face with false notes this badly either.
Still, don’t get me wrong. It is quite a good album. The songs are well thought out, you name it and it’s there, this is a classical prog-type thing. But to screw it all up this way is just too shameful.
There, I’ve said it. If anyone needs me, I’m out; trying to find someone who will still speak to me now.
