Live recordings on DVD or video never are as good as actually being part of the crowd. Being there when they perform and realising that these are the people who made all those albums is still the most honest way of seeing a band. Then, usually on decision of the label, there`s a B-quality video released, using two camera`s, completed with an interview (labeled as `extra`), and there`s another way of picking the money out of a fan`s pocket. Even with the newly discovered DVD-medium, there are only few labels that decide to release a package that is acually worth the huge amount of money usually asked for it. But Oblivion have earned themselves a compliment with Umbra et Imago`s first DVD-appearance, "Die Wellt Brennt". The band themselves don`t need an introduction, as they are one of the oldest and most shocking acts in the current German gothic scene. Their performances are always filled with both a well-performed set of music and a visual spectacle that makes you need to sit down after watching it.
The DVD is presented in a nice digipack, and is accompanied by a bonus-audio CD and a booklet with lyrics. Both discs offer the same tracks; "Feuer und Licht", "Goth Music" and my personal favourite, "Lieber Gott" (without Peter Heppner though), among others. | |
The DVD however is more interesting, as it features live performances of "Milch", "Viva Lesbian show" and "Rock Me Amadeus", which are not on the CD. Also, there are 2 photo-slideshows, each containing about 15 photos; a total of 7 (!) interviews, an introduction to the Kulturruine, some of the dance parties held at this club and a TV-special of frontman Mozart and guitarist Freddy in a hobby market, shopping for nails, glue and wood. Yes, really.
As a whole, this package presents you with an audio CD of 70 minutes and a DVD of over 200 minutes, amounting to a total of over 4 hours of entertainment! The small sticker on the back stating "freigegeben ab 18 Jahre" (suitable for 18 and older), and some of the inlay photos already give you an idea of what to expect, so I`d suggest you`d take a look at the photos before you decide whether this por… eh, music DVD is suitable for your living room. If you`re into Umbra et Imago, this is a must-buy, but I guess fans of the rest of the gothic scene will approve of this DVD too.
