Led Zeppelin, one of the godfathers of rock as we know it. Although millions of bands started their musical careers performing this band’s classics, it’s always risky to record a tribute. Considering the quality that Led Zeppelin produced decades ago, it’s difficult for anyone to get even close to their level, despite modern technology. Once again, this tribute proves that Robert Plant is not only capable of using his voice to convey lyrics in a very effective way, he’s able to use it as an instrument as well; a quality the vocalists on this album have not been able to attain. In addition, some of the lead singers have to work on their English (Tierra Santa - “Communication Breakdown”, White Skull -“Stairway To Heaven”) and some of them try too hard or simply sound too polished (Angra -“Kashmir”, Doro - “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”).

A couple of the bands have tried to create their own interpretation of a LZ song. Grave Digger succeeded in doing this with their very heavy version of “No Quarter”. They did so without losing the right tone, using very good production. Also the “Good Times, Bad Times” version of Axxis is a very well-balanced combination of exploiting the musical capabilities of the band on the one hand and producing a well-performed, swinging song for the average listener on the other hand. The album doesn’t contain any really bad versions of the Led Zeppelin songs, and there’s a lot of variety in sound and genre performed by some great bands. But still, when you compare it to the real thing…
