Gothic is a weird genre. But if Type O Negative on one, and The Cure on the other side are named `gothic`, I would have absolutely no trouble calling Fading Colours gothic, since basically every band I know lies somewhere between these two. Fading Colours is the re-incarnation of the band Bruno the Questionable, which was one of the biggest Polish rock bands, and the main reason why Nuclear Blast was battling with Dion Fortune Records. Dion won, resulting in the release of two albums and one EP, both re-released for a few weeks now, after a new signing to Metal Mind Records. An obvious choice, since Dion Fortune wasn’t big enough to cope with a band that performed several times at the Castle Party in Poland and whose debut album reached "album of the month" in a dozen European magazines. The music on "Black Horse" hasn’t changed since its original release date, back in 1995. Twenty seconds in the first song, it’s already obvious what to expect; gothic rock with female vocals, mixed with keyboards and quite some guitar solos.

Those solos are the best thing of the album, because after those twenty seconds the big disappointment also becomes clear; the voice of De Coy. You can clearly hear English isn’t her mother tongue, resulting in a bit messy sound on some verses. It’s the musical guidance that’s most important for this album, and it’s exactly this point in which Fading Colours prove their talent. The smooth guitar parts with some keyboard-loops on the background will have you shivering over your entire body during, for example, songs like "Unreality", the title track and "Love". Keeping in mind that the music is the most important thing, this album deserves to be spun around your CD-player a couple of times more, and you’ll realize the voice is something you’ll have to get used to. Although still not as good as either Peter Steele or Robert Smith. Sorry.
