Last summer Kansas toured the United States. The concert at Earthlink Live! in Atlanta was recorded and filmed and is now available on double CD. The title, Device – Voice – Drum, is a reference to the upcoming live DVD. The concert can best be viewed as a ‘Best of …’ show. Highlights are “The Wall”, “Point Of Know Return” and “The Preacher” which features The New Advent Choir. The huge hits “Dust In The Wind” and “Carry On My Wayward Son” are also included of course. Drummer Phil Ehart produced the CD, which is why the rhythm section, drum and bass, is strongly represented in the mix. This works well and gives a powerful live impulse.

The sound on both discs is great. In addition, CD two features some enhanced bonus material; a photo album and a screensaver. Most interesting, however, is a video recording of the track “Double Vision” which is an excerpt from the show not included on the upcoming DVD. This is obviously a marketing technique, but in practice nobody watches this kind of bonus material more than once, maybe twice. Why not provide an advance promotional track and still include it on the DVD? In conclusion though, this is probably the best possible recording of a ‘Best of Kansas’ concert.
