Back in 1989 Mick Harris, then drummer of Napalm Death and Mitch Harris, then guitarist of the unsurpassed Righteous Pigs, joined forces in a grindcore project called Defecation. That year they released the critically acclaimed album Purity Dilution. Meanwhile Mitch Harris joined Napalm Death, while Mick Harris left that band to work on various projects of which Scorn with John Zorn is probably the best known. Now, some fourteen tears later, the two have rejoined for another eruption of extreme metal. The first thing that strikes me is the change in sound. They’ve chosen for the ‘Scandinavian’ approach so to speak. The drums are clearly triggered, the bass drums almost sound like a type writer and the vocals are light and dirty screams.

On Purity Dilution the sound is more dry, direct and clear with low growling vocals. Typical of that era. The change in sound takes some getting used to but after a couple of spins it’s fine. Except for the vocals as they are the same the whole album through. After a while it becomes rather boring. But the music is great. Great riffs, super fast blast beats, stomping mid tempo parts, anything a grindcore album needs. If you ever have too much energy or aggression and want to lose it, play this record really loud and thrash your house. Let me tell you, it works. It’s time Mick and Mitch Harris (not related by the way) took this project to the stage.
