I guess Evergrey will surprise everybody with their new release called “In Search of Truth” The combination of high quality and sometimes virtuoso sounding progressive metal will please many of you progressive heavy metal fans. The band around singer / vocalist Thomas Englund, employee of a guitar shop, certainly showed some progression compared to their previous release “Solitude Dominance Tragedy”. I guess this also could have something to do with the great skills of the new solo guitarist Sven Karlsson, the use of a 20 piece choir (sounding really great), and the bigger studio budget the band obviously must have gotten. | |
The songs on “In Search of Truth” are full of enchanting melodies, great choruses (“The Masterplan”) and of course the capabilities of the separate musicians. The dark gloom Evergrey also displayed on previous releases remains. Especially by the sound of vocalist Englund with his not really heavy metal sounding vocals. This all certainly makes Evergrey rise above all mediocre releases that are coming out in this genre. The only thing that annoyed me was the completely useless drum & bass sample in “Rulers of the Mind”. I certainly don not hope if this is the kind of thing we can expect from this still growing band.
