The lords of the boards are back with a new record called “Walking On A Thin Line”. Their previous two albums turned them into one of Germany’s most successful rock bands ever. “Proud Like A God” is still the best-selling English debut of a German rock band. This third Guano Apes album picks up where "Don’t Give Me Names" left off: mid-tempo rock ballads filled with great melodies alternated with incidental crossover breaks.
Guano Apes have grown up and this new record shows a more mature, structured band. Their crossover roots are still noticeable, but are less present. The album’s opener and first single “You Can’t Stop Me” is a straight forward and melodic highlight. This song deals with the fight against oneself and the pessimism you have to battle each day. Sandra’s lyrics are more sensitive and because of her musical growth she’s not afraid to sing about love and it’s side-effects. | |
Another potential hit is “Quietly”. Sandra’s vocal range turns this song into a beautiful and emotional song which is definitely one of their best songs so far. Other album highlights are “High”, “Storm” and the beautiful ballad “Kiss The Dawn” (the album title is actually a phrase from this song). All songs are produced by Fabio Trentini who was assisted by the band itself.
Dennis’ punchy drums, Stefan’s rhythmic bass, Henning’s melodic and funky guitar and Sandra’s charismatic voice combined make a perfect all-round rock album. Not as freaky as their debut, but a more balanced and catchy album of a band that has the potential of becoming huge in Europe and Japan and maybe even in the States (as their tour with P.O.D and Creed already proved). If you’re a fan of Guano Apes or crossover music, or if you just dig straightforward rock you should definitely get a hold of this record.
