It just doesn’t seem to end. We hear one after the other talented band from the United States playing that grunge-type rock that Alice in Chains and bands like My Sisters Machine once created. Creed picked up the torch a few years ago and lit a whole new generation of rock bands. Seether is one of them. Originally from South-Africa, they’ve been operating from the United States for a while now. A very smart and necessary career move. The dark, heavy guitar sound, the hard-hitting chords and Shaun Morgan’s warm vocals combined with rich melodies and personal lyrics, make this album a fine branch on the US rock tree. Some like to call it ‘too much of the same’, but that only goes for those who don’t listen. Granted, their sound is a little stained by Staind (I know, a stupid joke), but it doesn’t rely on hooks and hit potential as much. Sure, songs like “Gasoline”, “Fine Again” and “Driven Under” have what it takes to make it in the charts, but most of Seether’s work is less obvious than what chart rock generally offers.

Seether is not afraid to spark their songs with noisy, hard elements and vocals that turn words into screams of frustration. Just take a look at Shaun Morgan’s personal lyrics; if they don’t make you scream out, what will? This is one of those albums that you want to listen to over and over again. Not because it is so much better than anything else, or because it makes you feel happy or sad. It’s because the formula works so damn good. And this is not meant to be criticism, because on the modern rock scale you’ll find them somewhere between Creed – Staind – Deftones; other bands who reap from the same formula. And that is not a bad place to be at. By the way, the album is released with 10 different covers, all of them portray someone holding a sign. I have no idea why, although it’s probably a marketing trick. Just so you know.
