Despite the wonderful lyrics and despite the sometimes very strong songs, there’s an aspect in the music of Gail Of God that doesn’t seem to fascinate much. On more than some occasions, I found myself wondering away by the band’s latest offering Severed. Take the first song "Human", a song that’s well-written but performed with such mourning vocals that you’re nearly afraid of front man Gail Liebling. It’s probably why the entire album has such a cold and nihilistic atmosphere. Undergod achieved the same, and is somehow a band that can be compared to this Dutch foursome.
Gail Of God bring us industrial metal with prominently pushed vocals and the usage of samples and keyboard loops, which work nearly perfectly on songs like "See Me!" or "Plague". | |
Unfortunately, these are the only two songs that show such quality. The rest of the album uses influences from a band like Marilyn Manson, and the band Chimaira probably isn’t unfamiliar to these people either. Neither one of these bands is somehow related to the industrial/electro scene. That’s probably why Severed sounds a bit messy at some points.
Overall, it’s not a bad record, in fact, some of the songs are really good, but I’d advice this band to use some more of the tasty keyboards and a bit less of the guitar riffs that are being used now. Then get the picture produced in a more proper way and you’ve got a record that whips the floor with the current industrial scene. Until then, this record doesn’t stand out from the crowd. (Eelco) |
