“He’s the master of monsters, the king of Japan… RODAN” Finally, some fellow believers. I almost gave up on monster-songs. Sure, the smoking remnants of the legendary Misfits keep cruising the globe till they’re zombified … Hardly any decent new groups dare touch the subject. Well, here are the Gaza Strippers. An American band fronted by Rick Sims from the Supersuckers. The Strippers deliver the goods with style. If I understand it right, this album is just something of a ‘quicky’. To give them a reason to go out and tour Europe. From The Desk Of Dr. Freepill… is their third full length album. And it smokes. Think Brain Donor, think Gluecifer, imagine you’ve been attacked by a bear and refused the morphine. This is what the first Guns ‘n Roses album could’ve sounded like if they ditched the smack and dropped some acid. Sleazy, trashy, rock n’ roll with the shadow of a trailer park lurking in the background.

Honest, sweaty, garage-music. This one’s for the real heads. Expect nothing too technical. There are flying V’s all over the place but Steve Vai isn’t there. The songs are simple but effective. And damn funny. ‘Almost Instant Karma’ could be a hit. So could – no should – ‘Rodan’. I had my doubts about Queens ‘Sheer Heart Attack’. That sound, those lyrics. It was one of the songs that helped me survive puberty. The production is less murky than on the original and Rick Sims sounds even snottier than Mercury did. Somehow, it works. They get away with it. It turned into a solid rocker. The album ends with three live tracks recorded in Sweden. Makes me wish they visit Holland next tour. I just don’t get the creepy cheerleader cover. Well…Keep visiting the good dr. Freepill boys. Or as Julian Cope put it: “Psychedelic music is so much better these days than it was in the sixties.”
