Big Wizard is the name, a skull on the cover and an absolute minimum of artwork. If I didn’t know better, I’d say we’ve got ourselves a Black Sabbath clone here. Not. Coming from the record label that also brought us Hermano and All Night, you know there has to be a connection to the seventies. Big Wizard perfectly fits this profile, with playful guitar riffs, beefy leads and harmonies, swinging drum work and sloping bass sounds. Retro at its best. Simply taking the best from the best just to turn it into their own little thing. Close to the borders of stoner, yet still safely on the seventies side. | |
Less groove, more melody.
Roll the window down, put your elbow out, turn the volume on your amp up and whistle that guitar lead sound, you know. This is air guitar rock.
So yes, there’s Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Uriah Heep and maybe even AC/DC in all the songs on Sophisticated Mouth. Or as singer Curtis Brown says: “The idea was to make this record sexy”…and if sexy means singers with hairy chests, swinging microphones, stale beer and soul drenched vocals, than yes, this is sexy.
