Looking at the album-cover you almost immediately know what to expect: extreme “underground” (if there still is such a thing) black/death metal. Well, that is partially true. It is indeed extreme black metal, with slight death metal influences. Those death influences are more or less explained when you know that Pete Helmkamp (Angelcorpse R.I.P.) is in this band. Also involved in Revenge is J. Read of Axis Of Advance, which is also more of a death metal band. But too bad for Revenge they have the same shitty sound as Axis Of Advance! Can bands not afford a decent production anymore? The both of them are signed to Osmose for crying out loud! The guitar-sound is just a blur and far too laid-back in the mix, drums lack power, and sound like real crap. Musically it is quite enjoyable, because as far as I can hear, thanks to the fucked-up sound, this band is producing decent written up-tempo songs, and by up-tempo I mean pure blastbeat ferociousness. | |
Vocals are sometimes quite distorted (‘Heathen Hammer’), and sometimes quite good (Pete Helmkamp rules!). Lyrically it is probably the usual anti-christian stuff, I do not know exactly because I do not have the lyrics, but by looking at the song-titles and the artwork I think I make a pretty good shot. But the overall-sound is just plain crap! I cannot believe that people would buy this, you can hardly hear what the guitarist is playing. If you are signed to a reasonably big label, I still assume that you can visit a studio which pays just a tad bit more attention and time to the mix and the sound-adjustment… I’m sorry, but if I can’t hear what a band is playing, that’s going to cost them points. Next time, with a better sound, when I can actually hear what they are playing, they might get a much higher grade. (Sjoerd) |
