Forces Of Greed is a really interesting release and a nice piece of metal from the band Dis. A young band from Utrecht, Holland showing us on their second demo that they can play their instruments well. Their level of musicianship is quite high, although the grunt vocals sound somewhat forced and not powerful enough. The clean (male) vocals are good, but are not convincing enough yet, although they are better than the grunts. The four songs on this demo are structured quite well and show a love for complex yet still very moody and aggressive music. And by moody I mean Anathema, My Dying Bride-like. The female vocalist in the song “Remembrance” is pretty good, although the song is the simplest one on this demo. Not bad at all!
The violin plays a big part in Dis’ music, and is therefore a big mood-element. | |
Their music can somehow be compared to a mix of elements from Dream Theater, My Dying Bride, Slayer, Anathema, Meshuggah, Opeth, and a few elements from the more gothic-metal inspired bands. But that’s probably only because of the female vocals in one of the songs.
I know this is not the most regular kind of music, so the band is more or less original. Sound and production are good, particularly for a demo. My guess is they’ve got a big future ahead of them. This music is highly enjoyable, and the four songs on this release show absolute potential. I know I’m very curious for their next release!
