Galloglass is yet another new power metal band. According to their biography they play fast, melodic power metal in the likes of early Helloween or early Blind Guardian; even parallels with early Fates Warning and Helstar are drawn. The comparison with the last two bands is very far fetched however, because in reality Galloglass sounds like a modern speed/power metal act with some early Helloween influences. This of course doesn’t necessarily mean that the album is a failure, I’m just pointing out this band has almost nothing in common with Helstar and early Fates Warning; mostly to avoid wrong expectations.
Legends From Now And Nevermore is an album that is full of clichés; from the standard fantasy lyrics to the song structures. Fortunately it is very well played with once in awhile a few refreshing ideas. The use of minor medieval influences and a violin adds an extra dimension to the music that steers the band clear from the masses and captivates the listener. | |
The songs are fast and melodic and Carsten Frank’s vocals are very decent. Sure, they are the standard type of power metal vocals but they are certainly better than the average singer in the scene.
Galloglass is definitely not bringing anything new. What they bring us is good melodic speed/power metal and if these guys can manage to purge their upcoming albums from clichés then expect to hear a whole lot from this band. While a song like “Eye To Eye” is an absolute cliché (and the only reference to Fates Warning I can find on this album, and not even early Fates Warning), other songs like “The Quest” and the title track are simply a pleasure to listen to.
