Maybe this review surprises you as much as me; hearing that Pungent Stench were back together and in the studio for a new album was good news indeed. Pungent Stench has always kept a special place in my heart. Who doesn`t remember the splendid Been Caught Buttering... album? Or the psychotic EP Dirty Rhymes And Psychotronic Beats? Or Pungent Stench`s swansong, and for me their best work to date, Club Mondo Bizarre?
Unfortunately, bassplayer Jacek decided not to be a part of Pungent Stench`s resurrection. His replacement comes in the guise of Marius (Belphegor), completing the illuster threesome and thus laying the basis for Masters Of Moral, Servants Of Sin. An album that is pretty much a disappointment. Personally, I feel that Pungent Stench without Jacek is NOT Pungent Stench, but a well-written, well-played and well-produced album could have convinced me otherwise. MoM,SoS is only half of those three: well-produced it is for sure. Well-written and well-played only in small doses - too small doses.
The sick song-titles, PS trademark, are still there. | |
"Loot Shoot Electrocute", "Rex Paedophilus", "Viva Il Vaticano" and "Mortuary Love Affair" make you believe time has not passed since 1993. However, musically, Pungent Stench sounds nothing like it used to. Gone are the catchy, groovy Club Mondo Bizarre songs. Gone is the typical Pungent Stench sound, traded in for something that fits more on a blackmetal album. Only the song "Retaliation" comes close to what the old Pungent Stench sounded like, but other than that, MoM,SoS sounds like a generic black-thrash-death hybrid with lyrics that don`t even fit with the rhythm on some songs.
There are still some good songs on the album. Especially "The Convent Of Sin", which sounds exactly like a Slayer song for the first minute-and-a-half, or "Suffer The Little Children To Come Unto Me" are examples of the quality that Pungent Stench has. However, bringing out an album under the moniker Pungent Stench, while making it sound nothing like Pungent Stench to me seems more like an easy way to cash in on the notoriety and fame they once had.
