CHICAGO -- Max Scherzer already has a Cy Young Award. Now he has a complete game. Scherzer tossed a three-hitter in his 179th career start for his first complete game and Victor Martinez hit his 16th homer to lead the Detroit Tigers a 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. "Its awesome," said Scherzer, who threw 113 pitches. "I finally got the monkey off my back. "I was finally able to go nine and finish the deal, so its good feeling." Scherzer (8-2) was back in his 2013 Cy Young form, striking out eight and walking three while outdueling Chicago starter Chris Sale (5-1). Only three times did the White Sox have men in scoring position. "I was surprised when I found out that he had no complete games," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. "But he wanted this one for sure. He was on his game tonight. He has a Cy Young for reason." Sale was nearly as sharp as Scherzer. He struck out 10 -- all swinging -- to match a season high and allowed five hits in seven innings. "When you face Sale, youve got to bring your A" game," Scherzer said. "Theres no room for error." Martinez hit a solo shot into the left field bullpen to lead off the fifth for the only run off Sale. Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs with an infield single with two out in the eighth of reliever Jake Petricka to put the Tigers ahead 3-0. Bryan Holiday drove in an insurance run in the ninth. Sale didnt allow a baserunner until Rajai Davis led off the fourth with a single and left the game with Detroit leading 1-0. But Scherzer was a bit better. "He was dominant," Sale said of Scherzer. "You know coming into this, you know who youre going up against and its not going to be easy. "For a long time there, it was whos going to flinch first and unfortunately it was me." Scherzer had allowed 20 runs over 26 1-3 innings in his previous four starts, going 1-1. The right-hander pitched nine innings once before in a game, on Sept. 1, 2010, in 2-1 10-inning loss to Minnesota. Martinez, who entered the game second in the AL with .330 average, extended his hitting streak to seven games as the Tigers ended a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 11. By salvaging the final game of its rain-shortened series against the White Sox, first-place Detroit widened its AL Central lead to 2 1/2 games over idle Kansas City. Martinez is batting .327 against Chicago in 154 games with 24 homers and is 13 for 25 (.520) against Sale. Sale rebounded nicely from his previous start, a no-decision last Saturday in Anaheim when he took a three-hit shutout and 5-0 lead into the eighth against the Angels, but then fell apart. Scherzer walked Alejandro De Aza and Adam Eaton in the third for the games first two baserunners. But Gordon Beckham flew out deep to right to end the threat. Davis led off the fourth with the games first hit, a smashed, one-bounce single off the glove of White Sox third baseman Conor Gillaspie. But Sale picked Davis off during the next at-bat. NOTES: Sale struck out at least 10 and walked none for the third time in his career. .. Cabrera moved back to first base after a left hamstring pull restricted him to DH for two games. CF Austin Jackson entered the game with 10 hits in his last 20 at-bats -- but is just 2-for-30 lifetime against Sale and didnt start. "Its just really a good time to give him (Jackson) a day off," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "You want to give guys a day off, generally speaking, against pitchers they dont do as well against." Rajai Davis moved to centre field and J.D. Martinez starting in left. . Slumping Chicago C Tyler Flowers returned after sitting out Thursday. He entered the game 3 for his last 37. . The White Sox open a series at home against Kansas City on Friday with Jose Quintana (3-6) expected to face Jeremy Guthrie (2-6). The Tigers host Minnesota on Friday with Drew Smyly (3-4) slated to start against the Twins Kyle Gibson (5-5). Phil Jones Jersey . SEATTLE -- Mike Zunino hit a game-ending single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. Michael Saunders and Raul Ibanez led off the 10th with back-to-back walks before Blake Parker (0-1) was relieved by Shawn Camp. Jason Bay advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Justin Smoak was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Zunino then worked the count full before singling up the middle. Yoervis Medina (3-2) pitched the 10th to earn the win. Oliver Perez struck out the side in the ninth, his 12 consecutive scoreless inning pitched. Alfonso Soriano and Dioner Navarro homered for the Cubs, who ended a two-game winning streak. Bay hit his ninth home run and Nick Franklin had two doubles among his three hits for the Mariners, who had lost two in a row. Cubs starter Travis Wood left in position for his first win in five starts after allowing two runs on three hits and striking out six in 6 1-3 innings, but Chicagos bullpen failed, leaving Wood winless since May 30. The Cubs had a 4-2 lead going into the eighth with James Russell on the mound. Franklin led off with a double and Kendrys Morales drove him home with a one-out double. Ibanez followed with a run-scoring triple on a line drive that got past sliding left fielder Brian Bogusevic and rolled to the wall, tying the game at 4. Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma pitched eight innings, with four runs and six hits allowed. He struck out five. It was the fourth time this season Iwakuma has completed eight innings, and all four times he has come away with a noo decision.dddddddddddd. The Cubs led 2-1 going into the seventh and added to their lead with a pair of home runs, both coming on the first pitch. Soriano led off with a drive just inside the left field foul pole, his eighth. With two outs Novarro also hit his eighth homer to right-centre. The Cubs took advantage of a throwing error by Franklin, Seattles second baseman, in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Soriano led off the inning with a single, and with one out Ryan Sweeney hit a hard grounder down the first base line that got into the deep right field corner for a triple. Soriano scored and second baseman Franklins relay throw home got past catcher Zunino, allowing Sweeney to score on the error and giving the Cubs a 2-0 lead. The Mariners didnt get a hit until the fourth inning when Franklin led off with a double and didnt score until Bay homered to lead off the fifth. All nine of Bays home runs this season have been solo shots. Seattle scored again in the seventh. After Bay led off with a walk and Dustin Ackley was called out on strikes, Carlos Villanueva came on to replace Wood. Bay went to third on Zuninos bloop single, and Brad Miller -- making his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A Tacome before the game -- drove in Bay with a fielders choice. NOTES: Miller was the eighth player to make his MLB debut with Seattle this season. He was 0 for 3 with a walk, RBI and stolen base. ... Seattle optioned INF Carlos Triunfel to Tacoma and designated INF Alex Liddi for assignment. ... The Mariners started Dustin Ackley at CF for the first time. ...
